The Present Is A Gift So Be Here Now.

From "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass.

From “Be Here Now” by Ram Dass.

We live in tumultuous times and my chosen path is to navigate through shifting sands, while remaining fairly harmonious and doing the entire thing with a certain amount of ease and grace. Or  at least that’s the plan, I try not to get too far ahead with the details of what I’m creating, by the time I get there details will have quite likely changed, sometimes drastically so. It is the closest I can be to living in the moment, in that space a lot of the time but stuff does still get triggered, which will often bring up the past, and also fears around the future.

Am I house sitting, renting or living with my mother, the how, why and when of all this possibility continues to be perfectly fluid, I hold a piece of potential in my hand and look to the future. I can see how it might shape that landscape but in the next moment it might change completely. So I do my best to give myself to the moment that I am in, and what I find is that the present moment is usually pretty good, nothing to stress about.

I guess I’m challenging the part of me that worries about survival, roof over the head and food on the table kind of thing, we do live in uncertain times and faith is essential in order to be a calm space amidst the chaos that is modern life. The thing is I have never been in the position of not having somewhere to live, I’ve been living in some very nice places with my house sitting. And the food I eat is largely organic, and with very little in the way of processed products, as much a whole food diet as I can manage while listening to the body’s changing needs.

I am feeling a lot more trusting though, everybody is entitled to being a bit shaky from time to time, it’s called being a part of the human race! Most of the time I am very happy on my path, often intensely so, seems that the struggle has finally been let go of, as the  future opens up pregnant with possibilities.

The Future City.

It amazes me that one can still speak to people sometimes who don’t seem to comprehend what unsustainable actually means, there’s a kind of sheep mentality that thinks we can keep treating our environment and each other the way that we are, and get away with it. Luckily I live in a place where most of the people are aware, we don’t all necessarily think the same way about it, but we do all acknowledge that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Alex Steffen describes it as stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it GDP.

He says that when we look to move to renewable energy we are actually tackling a problem that can’t be solved, with the growing urban population operating in the way it generally does now, we could never generate sufficient energy by any means. I’m not sure if I completely agree with this notion, but I do like what he is putting forward as an alternative, cities need to be re-designed so that space is shared more efficiently. Rather than owning certain pieces of equipment, such as a power drill, we would have access to the service when we need it.

Buildings also need to become more efficient, using the breeze for cooling, sunlight for heating and light, utilise systems where they collect rainwater that can then be used to create gardens and perhaps connect to the rivers.  Alex mentions pollination pathways so that butterflies and bees are invited back into the urban environment, to me it sounds like a much more life and people oriented philosophy than is currently operating in our cities.

The more dense a city the lower the emissions according to Alex, this is because people don’t actually own cars, they use public transport, they walk, and they ride bicycles. This too needs to be incorporated into the design of our future cities, having become a country girl I tend to think a bit negatively about cities, but like anything, it’s all in the perception. Cities can be opportunities to do things differently and to do them better than before, much of this is already happening around the world and if we are to survive as humans on this planet it needs to become our new way of being.

Futurist Alex Steffen is excited about the cities of the future. We live in a rapidly urbanizing world, and this is a good thing. The density brings many unforeseen blessings, shedding the car is just one of them.
We will no longer be talking about the dream house, but rather the dream neighborhood. Welcome to his vision!

Losing Nemo.

There is a lot of talk these days about getting enough of the good oils, in particular omega 3’s, a common source of this fat is of course fish. The only problem with this is that the disregard for sustainability that can be seen in corporations and governments around the world, extends into our oceans as well. If getting enough fish in our diet means that the ocean will be completely fished out by 2048, then a responsible person might just want to find other sources of omega 3’s.

Chia seeds: a rich source of omega 3's.

Chia seeds: a rich source of omega 3’s.

Once again we have an example of vested interests who only care about making money, destroying our resources without any thought for the future. Since 1950 we have lost 90% of large fish from the sea, boats with HUGE nets trawl the oceans taking everything in their path, throwing away the bits that are of no use to them. It’s a far cry from the habits of indigenous people who generally take only what they need, with respect, leaving enough behind that the resources will continue to be there for future generations.

Western culture claims to operate on rational principles, does what I have described here make any sense to you? It certainly doesn’t to me, how can politicians keep taking money and favours from the lobby groups and still look their children in the eyes, knowing that their actions are changing the world forever, and not for the best of all humankind.

The separation of the heart and the head is the source of much of this insanity in my opinion, without the heart’s wisdom the head cannot really truly understand the consequences of its decisions. That’s what needs to happen in the inner realms of the future human, a coming together of the mind and the heart, an evolution into coherence. And of course there is also direct action, the Black Fish is a protest vessel that will be focusing on the Mediterranean Sea over the next year, where fishing regulations are routinely ignored, they will endeavour to expose and challenge these practices. Year 2048: NONE of the fish left in the sea that we’re currently eating?
That is the dire warning in this captivating animated short about the overfishing of our seas.
A beautifully produced cartoon on a subject that couldn’t be more serious:

My Fortunate Life.

This blog charts some pretty steep ups and downs, whatever is expressing through me can change from one day to the next, today is no exception to that pattern. I had trouble finding something to talk about yesterday, I was tired and somewhat bereft of inspiration, today I’m still weary, but feeling inspired and confident about my vision of the future. That’s my own particular slice of the bit of time that comes next in this journey, the world may be going to hell in a handbasket, but I can see security, love, fulfillment of purpose, a simple life, and all the creature comforts in mine.

Does it perhaps sound a bit selfish, not really, I do the work of spirit, and will be doing so even more strongly as I put down my roots and for once in my life experience this task of mine with security and with companionship. I’ve chosen a really difficult path to travel down, and the time of harvest is at hand, even as we move into mid-winter here in the southern hemisphere. Good things are on the way, and all I have to do is keep following my intuition and to continue to grow and expand and enjoy my life.

How can you be so sure of all of this, I hear you ask, a very good question and one I am more than happy to answer. Today I went to have a reading for myself, something that I am usually offering rather than receiving, which makes for a nice change. What I heard was complete confirmation of everything that I have been visioning and that has come through for me as channeling, down to the last details pretty much! It was as if she knew me, the kind of person I am and what my needs are and what I am here on the planet to do, all of it was there and coming through a very pure channel, no ego there at all.

This is where readings really come into their own in my humble opinion, the best ones don’t tell you anything you don’t already know, especially if you are very intuitive. But if you have a strong sense about your life and it’s direction, then hearing all of that reflected back to you by a stranger who knows you not at all is very powerful.

Thank you spirit yet again for guiding me to what I most needed.

At last the time for harvest has come, I’m ready to celebrate with joy burnished bright, as the path winds its way from darkness to light.

Generation Of Hope.

Just for a change of pace, I’d like to share with you an inspirational video that gives me great hope for humanity, these young people look to me like future humans, I wish I had my act together the way they do! And apparently more than 50% of the world’s population is under 25, so they also carry the weight of numbers. There seem to be a few different names for this generation, but I’ve known them as Generation Y, one of the speakers in this film speculates that it may represent the fact that it is the generation that is facing a real fork in the road for the future.

And that’s the most important story on the planet is it not? Whatever else we may do with ourselves as a people, we require an environment to do it in that will support us, the number of people who are waking up to this is so exciting. I got really excited about the Occupy Wall Street movement when it started, since then there has been Occupy Earth and a movie has come out called Occupy Love, haven’t seen it yet but planning on buying the dvd and showing it in my community.

generationy

I shared a house with a couple of young men who were Generation Y and was impressed with their ability to decide what they wanted, and to then plan on how to get there, none of the dithering and self-sabotage I seem to have specialised in! Of course there are those in every age group who are still asleep, but we don’t need everyone to be awake for this to work, and in the new world we will create, it will be a lot easier for those of us with more trauma to focus on our healing.

These kids are the internet generation too, and with the ability to connect instantly, the possiblity of change happening really quickly becomes much more likely. The Golden Age can’t come soon enough for me, bring it on my young friends, you are the people we’ve been waiting for!

It’s perhaps the best of times and
the worst of times, but there is
no time for distractions anymore.

Here’s a video with dozens of young
voices expressing how they feel about
their influence and potential impact
at this turning point in history.

“We are writing a different story than
the one we have been led to believe is
inevitable.”  says one young woman proudly.
