Food Forests Are Fun- And Good For You!

cartoon-bugFor those of us in the southern hemisphere who are experiencing winter, you might be feeling those bugs dancing around you, waiting for an opportunity to make you sick. I’ve gone for whole winters without getting sick but nothing wrong with a bit of a workout for the immune system every now and then. And when you do need a bit of extra help you may look no further than nature where all kinds of fruits abound.

Juicy orange

I am feeling particularly grateful to the citrus fruits at the moment, lemon and orange juice brewed up with honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic and ginger. Add a good helping of some fine single malt whiskey once you have taken your slowly simmered medicine off the stove and the alchemy is complete! That’s my recipe for a hot toddy, I don’t remember who I got it from but I do know that it is wonderful for colds and flu. And the fine brew we made came from fruit on the trees here at our latest house sit, abundance comes in many forms and this is certainly bounteous nature at her best!

I’m not sure about some of the garlic but the ginger came from a lovely lady at my Sunday market who sells strawberries, avocados and other yummy things. The honey comes from my local co-op and is raw, so my medicine for my cough was made with very fine ingredients! And when I sent my Beloved out for the whiskey I was happy when he came back with a good bottle, nice and smooth. It’s a funny thing but the only time I ever really want whiskey is when I’m sick with a cold or bug of some description. For me it really is medicine, does a wonderful job of healing and in winter it’s nice to be so hot, but you wouldn’t want to be drinking it all the time.

So if you are in winter at the moment consider whether your immune system might need a boost, when there is a lot of fruit on the trees sometimes even organic can be quite cheap, certainly no more than the commercial fruit. In fact whatever season you are currently inhabiting may well be rich with all the nutrition you need. Nature does seem to balance supply and demand quite well if treated with respect, if you have the opportunity plant a food forest where you live!

I like the sound of that!

Choosing Joy.

My current view!

My current view!

The powerful energies of transformation have been hard at work and I for one am feeling the benefits of staying focused on creating change in my life, at the same time that I am taking good care of myself. Having said that I do still have a cold in my system that has been hanging around for over three weeks now, and I have taken herbal tonics, lots of lime juice, and slowed down considerably. It might be tempting to ask myself what I’m doing wrong but that would be counter productive, as well as the care I have taken in the outer world I am doing lots of healing in my inner realms, in my temple.

The Inner Neural Workout!

The Inner Neural Workout!

I mean, what more can a girl do I ask myself, simple answer really, just keep doing what you are doing and don’t give up! I believe the cold is a sign that the detox on all levels of my being is continuing and that the work I’m doing is paying off, this is where being bloody minded can come in handy to marshal my persistence to new levels of determination. I am meditating every day and going into my temple to heal myself, there are a few things I am working on and some I will keep to myself for now, but rest assured I am including my immune system in this process.

Life is still very busy but I am coping with it now and can truly enjoy all the fun aspects, which is pretty much all of it, flamenco, choir, my work as a crisis counsellor and as a psychic, my writing for this blog.  I’m back in the space of inspiration and joy with it all. So the theme of balance that came in with the New Moon in Libra feels complete now, and the focus is on Scorpio’s influence of deep transformation, letting go of the resistance that has played the saboteur in the past. Hence the body’s method of shedding through bodily fluids, even as I cough and blow my nose (only very occasionally), I am feeling uplifted and have a sense of deep peace in my body.

Doing a house sit in a place that doesn’t have the usual right angles everywhere and expansive views of the green rolling hills as I sit out on the balcony, is also a big contributing factor to this peaceful feeling. If you are ever in a place that isn’t the usual modern architecture, you know, high ceilings, rounded shapes and sloping angles, notice how this makes you feel in your body. I have a feeling of nourishment and joy that comes from this difference in the space that brings a softness to my heart that is quite delicious.

But wherever you may be, tune into the environment and find some kind of joy in it, even if that seems like a huge challenge, there is always a choice and why not make it a positive one! It’s a bit like the state of consciousness that the American Indians call ‘Beauty’s Way’, where even a rubbish dump seems vividly beautiful…………….the sacred is everywhere…………Ho!

Give Your Dreams Wings!

I really do appreciate my good health, especially after my immune system has spent pretty much a whole week at the gym! The pleasure in being embodied is even sharper and everything seems to flow, just as well considering the busy week that I will be navigating in the river of my life. The sense of being tuned in to the flow of spirit is also feeling clearer and there is a sense of joy in being alive that comes from being connected to all things.

You know those moments when something pops out of your mouth unexpectedly, it isn’t an expression that you’ve ever used before and you don’t really know where it came from. But for the person you are speaking to it really hits the spot, that happened for me with someone I was counselling and it really made my night! I’d like to share it with you if I may:

Be clear about what you want to manifest.

Then give it over to a higher power and that’s what gives it  WINGS!

It’s the bit about the wings that is a new expression for me, but I think it will now be something I use a lot, for myself and for others. Those moments when we are relaxed and open to possibility are when we truly allow ourselves to become a part of life’s flow, it’s a kind of channeling and often happens when we are focused on something other than ourselves. Or if you are very tired, it’s never a bad thing for my client if I am exhausted when giving a reading, the veils become even thinner then, although I don’t particularly recommend it as a technique for developing your psychic abilities!

The bottom line here is, relaxation is the key to so many things, you can build up to a climax through tension and it can be pretty amazing, but if you find the ecstatic flow in the valley your climax will go for much longer. And while this can obviously apply to sex, it has much broader applications in an inspired and creative life!

Ahhhhhhh………..don’t you just love life!!!!!

The Body Speaks.

To stay on an even keel and not to be overwhelmed, a constant challenge in this busy life I have created!  I didn’t have to stay longer at the club tonight but in doing so I created stronger connections with my community, as well as having a bucket load of fun. Then home to write posts with so much less time than I had planned, and I have a really sore throat, oh Goddess please don’t let me get sick. It will make my night out at the theatre tomorrow night so much less enjoyable, I will have to have a chat with my body and see if there is some other way for it to release whatever it is trying to let go of.

I don’t get sick very often, genetics plays a part in this, I have a particularly tough constitution. But I also communicate with my body all the time, when I can feel sickness coming on I always ask my body if there is some other way that it can clear whatever it is needing to get out of my system. This is why I am not a believer in taking medication for colds, the body is busy getting rid of toxins and all you are doing is pushing it all back into the system. So at the end of the day I will surrender to the cold if I have to, but a lot of the time it dances around my edges and then goes away.

Of course you need to keep your immune system nice and strong, good nutrition is an important part of that as well as supplements. Listen to your body, I’ve been starting every day with a green smoothie since the New Year, but a few days ago my smoothie didn’t taste so good, always a sign that something needs to change. So I’m having them every second day and lo and behold, my smoothie tastes good again!

Good health is kind of simple in some ways, but we have strayed such a long way from basic nutrition and self-care in this culture, people have largely forgotten those basics. Time to return to the past, and add in the amazing new information that is coming in from the new paradigm!

Relax Your Heart.

For those who’ve been paying attention I promised a post on being buried alive, well I’m going to be a tease and make you wait for that one. At the moment I’m doing some research on the health benefits of generosity for an article I’m writing, and I’m very impressed with the amount of research that’s been done in this area. It’s research that seems to be mostly ignored by the current powers that be, the idea that giving to others could actually benefit the giver, is a concept that doesn’t quite compute in a reality of total world domination!

But its true! If you give to others you will live longer, have a stronger immune system, be less likely to suffer depression or heart disease, if you are in chronic pain it will be decreased. The effects are much more heightened if you actually have direct contact with the people you are giving to. People who volunteer are generally much happier, positive emotions stimulate the release of endorphins, dilating the blood vessels, and what that does is produce a relaxed heart.

Imagine a world full of people with relaxed hearts, all giving to each other and being kind to themselves, hard to imagine someone with a relaxed heart being into self-flagellation! The answers to creating a better world always end up being so simple, only an extremely stupid race of beings could overlook such basic information. Of course indigenous people the world over have understood this for eons, it can be found in spiritual texts thousands of years old, so one shouldn’t be throwing the bath water out with the baby.

There is hope for humanity, just don’t look for it in our ruling bodies for the most part, they still tend to support the economic theory that places self-interest as the guiding principle of human motivation. In 1972 the King of Bhutan coined the term Gross National Happiness and a sophisticated survey instrument was developed to measure the general well-being of the population. How would it be if all governments measured their success in governing by how happy their constituents were!

This is not a pipe dream, we can create the world that we would like to live in, as Margaret Mead said:

Never  doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;  indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
Margaret  Mead
